Biography

With more than a decade of history of collaboration since 2013, Yusaku Mizushima again served Susan Rockefeller as her hair and makeup artist for the occasion of Sailors for the Sea Japan Charity Gala at BVLGARI Hotel Tokyo in 2024.
Sailors for the Sea was founded by David Rockefeller, Jr. and he sits as honorary chairman for Sailors for the Sea Japan which Susan supports as the board of Oceana Ocean Councils, an affiliate organization to Sailors for the Sea Japan.

Mizushima supervised for hair & makeup on the 150 anniversary Music Video of Aoyama Gakuin.
Additionally as a guest artist, he gave a lecture on fashion, art, haute couture, the report of “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” at the Metropolitan museum, the recital of the pianist Yumi Okazaki at the Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, “Shinobu Sato DIVA forever exhibition “ creative produced by Mizushima, Yusuke Suga of his mentor and more at the Department of Cultural and Creative Studies of Aoyama Gakuen University, Tokyo Japan in 2024.

In New York, Mizushima was in charge of hair and makeup for pianist Yumi Okazaki  for the recital, “Yoshitaka Murata & Yumi Okazaki Recital, Tribute to Italy”, at the Zankel Hall in Carnegie Hall in 2024.

Mizushima was again in charge of hair and makeup for Susan Rockefeller for the occasion of Sailors for the Sea Japan Charity Gala at Happo-en in 2023.

Mizushima worked as the creative producer for the SHINOBU SATO DIVA FOREVER exhibition and SHINOBU SATO brand of the soprano, Shinobu Sato. This is the first special exhibition focusing on Shinobu Sato’s career as an opera singer and her magnificent stage costumes.
She has performed on stages all over the world wearing HANAE MORI PARIS HAUTE COUTURE dresses designed by the world-famous fashion designer Hanae Mori.
 In addition to the 80 costumes selected from HANAE MORI PARIS HAUTE COUTURE’s private collection, haute couture dresses by the costume designer of Opera houses will also be on display along with videos and audios.
The designer exhibition was held at STUMP BASE (Minami Aoyama, Tokyo), a studio built by Tadao Ando in 2023.
It was shown the encounter between Sato’s philosophy of art and the world of fashion and beauty.

In New York, Mizushima was in charge of hair and makeup for pianist Yumi Okazaki and  violinist Alexander Hobbs for their collaborative recital, “Yumi Okazaki Piano Recital with  Alexander Hobbs”, at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall in 2019.

His work transcends genres, as he did the makeup of Kabuki (classical Japanese dance drama) Grand Maser Takaaki Umezu for the Kabuki-za (principal theatre of Kabuki in  Ginza)ʼs 35th and the 70 years old anniversary in 2019 (since 2000).

Mizushima offered his hair and makeup service as an auction item at the Charity  Auction of the Sailors for the Sea Blue Seafood Guide Charity Gala with Ms. Susan  Rockefeller in 2018.

Highly experienced in the film and theatre industry, Mizushima created the hair and  makeup look for the poster of the revival of the musical “Ri Koran”, directed by the  Asari Office in 2018. Ever since this musical was first performed by the famed Shiki Theatre Company in 1991, he has been the lead hair and makeup artist for the entire  cast.

Thanks to his expertise across many fields, Mizushima worked as the event producer  for the CYBEX Japan launch event, which was held at the Cite Du Temps Ginza hall, Nicolas G. Hayek Center in Tokyo. In addition, he has been appointed as brand advisor  to CYBEXʼs headquarters in Germany in 2017.

As a guest artist, he gave a lecture on the theme of “beauty and life” at the Tokyo Fuji  Art Museum in 2016.

Mizushima has made various appearances in different medias; notably, his interview and  conversation with Japanese celebrity late-night host Tetsuko Kuroyanagi on Iki-Iki  magazine in 2015.

And appearing as a guest on Fumiaki Miyamotoʼs FM Tokyo radio program  Music Bird in 2014.

The artistʼs professional journey started when he began working under Yusuke Suga as  his assistant in Japan. At the time, Mr. Suga was one of the most acclaimed  hairdressers in New York, styling Vogue Magazine US covers with legendary figures  such as photographer Richard Avedon.

With the help of his mentor, Mizushima got his first reoccurring job as the hair and  makeup stylist of none other than legendary TV host Tetsuko Kuroyanagi for her weekly  program “The Best Ten”.

After an extensive experience in Japan, Mizushima left for New York at the age of 31,  where he worked at Mr. Sugaʼs “Suga Salon”. Upon his return to Tokyo, he created  immaculate hair and makeup looks for various famed musicals, including Shiki Theatre  Company director Keita Asariʼs productions of “Crazy for You,” “Aspects of Love,”  “Prelude to a Kiss,” and the Shiki Theatre Companyʼs original production of “Ri Koran.”

Mizushima has also collaborated with one of Japanʼs most celebrated fashion designer  Kenzo Takada for his brand KENZOʼs collection in Japan. Additionally, he worked with  Mr. Takada for the iconic Japanese theatre troop Takarazuka Revueʼs production of  “Perfume de Paris”; the costumes were designed by Kenzo Takada, and the makeup by  Mizushima.

Makeup design and application for international fashion magazines in Korea: Vogue,  Harperʼs Bazaar, ELLE, Madame FIGARO, and Marie Claire.

Hair styling for Lancômeʼs campaign photoshoots with famed Parisian makeup artist  Thibault Vabre, with actresses Juliette Binoche, Elizabeth Scarlett Jagger, Marie Gillian,  and Inés Sastre. Participated in the photoshoot of Lancômeʼs beauty magazine  “MEMOIRE LA BEAUTE, LANCOME”, with Juliette Binoche.

Hair and makeup artist for Estée Lauder campaign model Carolyn Murphy for the  brandʼs exclusive event in Japan.

Chief hair and makeup artist at legendary fashion house Givenchyʼs collections,  “Hubert de Givenchy,” “John Galliano,” and “Alexander McQueen”, for every season,  showed in Japan.

He was also the makeup and hair artist for Alexander McQueenʼs  Japan collections.

Chief hair and makeup artist for the eclectic Italian fashion house ETROʼs 40th  anniversary collection in Japan, collaborating with the esteemed Etro family.
