Biography
With more than a decade of history of collaboration since 2013, Yusaku Mizushima again served Susan Rockefeller and David Rockefeller Jr. as their hair and makeup artist, and attended the occasion of Sailors for the Sea Japan / Blue Seafood Guide High-level Charity Dinner, at the Continental Dining, Ark Hills Club in 2025.
Sailors for the Sea was founded by David Rockefeller, Jr. and he sits as honorary chairman for Sailors for the Sea Japan which Susan supports as the board of Oceana Ocean Councils, an affiliate organization to Sailors for the Sea Japan.

In July 2024, Yusaku Mizushima participated as Hair & Makeup Supervisor
in the music video “You Are Be the Difference,” produced to commemorate
the 150th anniversary of Aoyama Gakuin.
Later that month, he appeared as a guest artist at the Faculty of Cultural
and Creative Studies, Aoyama Gakuin University, where he delivered a lecture drawing on his professional experience.
Topics included fashion, art, haute couture, a report on the exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York,
the Carnegie Hall performances featuring pianist Yumi Okazaki for whom he provided hair and makeup,
the exhibition “SHINOBU SATO DIVA FOREVER — Eternal Diva,” which he creatively produced,
as well as reflections on his mentor, Yusuke Suga.
In June 2024, Yusaku Mizushima served as Hair & Makeup Artist for the recital of pianist Yumi Okazaki, held at Zenkel Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York, on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

In addition, as a Concept Creator, he has been responsible for the overall visual concept and creative direction for Yumi Okazaki, including portrait photography, website planning, and SNS visual content, creating a cohesive and consistent artistic identity across all platforms.
In May 2023, Yusaku Mizushima served as Creative Producer for
“SHINOBU SATO DIVA FOREVER — Eternal Diva” and the SHINOBU SATO Brand.
This exhibition was presented as the first special exhibition focusing on the
artistic legacy of opera singer Shinobu Sato, highlighting both her career and the elegance of her stage costumes.
The exhibition featured approximately 80 selected pieces from the personal
collection of HANAE MORI PARIS HAUTE COUTURE, created by the world
renowned fashion designer Hanae Mori, along with haute couture dresses by opera house costume designers, showcased together with archival video and sound recordings of Shinobu Sato.
The exhibition was held at STUMP BASE (Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo), a studio designed by architect Tadao Ando, and explored the intersection of Shinobu Sato’s artistic philosophy and the world of mode and beauty.

In March 2019, Yusaku Mizushima served as makeup artist for Takaaki Umezu, Grand Master of the Umezu-ryu, a traditional kabuki lineage at performances held at both the Kabuki-za Theatre and the National Noh Theatre.
He has continued to provide makeup for Umezu annually.
In the same year, he was responsible for makeup at the 35th Anniversary and 70th Birthday Commemorative Performance, the 16th Takaaki Umezu Recital, held at the Kabuki-za Theatre.
The program featured Kyōkanoko Musume Dōjōji and Manzai,
with guest appearances by renowned kabuki actors Kankurō Nakamura and Minosuke Bandō.
Yusaku Mizushima has been providing makeup for Takaaki Umezu since 2000, maintaining a long-standing professional relationship spanning more than two decades.
Mizushima offered his hair and makeup service as an auction item at the Charity Auction of the Sailors for the Sea Blue Seafood Guide Charity Gala with Ms. Susan Rockefeller in 2018.
Highly experienced in the film and theatre industry, Mizushima created the hair and makeup look for the poster of the revival of the musical “Ri Koran”, directed by the Asari Office in 2018. Ever since this musical was first performed by the famed Shiki Theatre Company in 1991, he has been the lead hair and makeup artist for the entire cast.

Thanks to his expertise across many fields, Mizushima worked as the event producer for the CYBEX Japan launch event, which was held at the Cite Du Temps Ginza hall, Nicolas G. Hayek Center in Tokyo. In addition, he has been appointed as brand advisor to CYBEXʼs headquarters in Germany in 2017.
As a guest artist, he gave a lecture on the theme of “beauty and life” at the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum in 2016.
Mizushima has made various appearances in different medias; notably, his interview and conversation with Japanese celebrity late-night host Tetsuko Kuroyanagi on Iki-Iki magazine in 2015.
And appearing as a guest on Fumiaki Miyamotoʼs FM Tokyo radio program Music Bird in 2014.
Yusaku Mizushima began his career under the guidance of his master, Yusuke Suga,
one of the most prominent Japanese figures active in New York at the time,
who also became his lifelong mentor in both profession and life.
During his student years, Mizushima encountered Beautiful Hair by Suga,
a book that left a lasting impression on him.
Recognizing Suga as a true master of international stature,
he chose him as his teacher and guide,
and resolved to pursue a professional path in beauty,
committing himself to learning under Suga’s direct guidance.
While Suga operated his own beauty salon, SUGA SALON, in New York,
he also served as Director of STUDIO-V, the beauty salon of the Hanae Mori Group in Japan.
Mizushima trained under his master at STUDIO-V,
where he refined the foundations of his hair and makeup artistry.
Suga was widely known for his work alongside legendary photographer Richard Avedon,
including cover shoots for VOGUE USA,
and was active at the forefront of the international fashion and beauty scene.

Mizushima’s first regular assignment came through Yusuke Suga’s introduction,
when he was selected to handle hair for Tetsuko Kuroyanagi,
the host of the iconic Japanese television program The Best Ten.
At the age of 31, he made his first professional visit to the United States,
working under Yusuke Suga at SUGA SALON in New York.
Immersed in international high society and the high-end fashion world,
he internalized a refined sense of luxury and aesthetic sensibility
at the forefront of the global fashion and beauty scene.
After returning to Japan, Mizushima was given the opportunity to work with director Keita Asari on original productions by Shiki Theatre Company, beginning with the company’s original musical Li Xianglan.
Through this encounter, he went on to design and plan the hair and makeup for major musical productions including Li Xianglan, Crazy for You, Aspects of Love, and Prelude to a Kiss, overseeing the overall hair and makeup design and planning for each production.

He later participated as a makeup artist in KENZO runway collections presented in Japan,
designed by Kenzo Takada.
Subsequently, he was invited by Takada to oversee makeup design planning
for Parfum de Paris, a production by the Takarazuka Revue,
for which Takada served as costume designer.
Mizushima went on to work as a hair and makeup artist for international editorial projects,
contributing to Korean editions of VOGUE, HARPER’S BAZAAR, ELLE, madame FIGARO, and marie claire,
further establishing his presence in global fashion publishing.

For LANCÔME, with creative direction by celebrated Paris-based makeup artist Thibault Vabre,
Yusaku Mizushima was entrusted with hair styling for campaign actresses
including Juliette Binoche, Inès Sastre, Elizabeth Jagger, and Marie Gillain,
for Japan launch events and fashion magazine beauty editorials.
He also worked on the beauty magazine Mémoire La Beauté, Lancôme,
where he was responsible for Juliette Binoche’s hair.
For ESTÉE LAUDER, he was entrusted with hair and makeup styling
for campaign model Carolyn Murphy during official Japan launch events.

In Tokyo, Mizushima served as Chief of the Japan-based Hair & Makeup Team
for GIVENCHY collections across multiple seasons designed by
Hubert de Givenchy, John Galliano, and Alexander McQueen.
For the Alexander McQueen–era GIVENCHY collections presented in Japan,
he served as leader of the Japanese hair and makeup team,
appointed by the House to work on site with Alexander McQueen himself
and the French lead team, contributing to the realization of the maison’s creative vision.
At ETRO’s 40th Anniversary Collection,
Mizushima participated as Chief of the hair and makeup artist team in Japan,
working closely with the Etro family.
